I've contact some people from a local biking community who have done Patra to
Athens (and back) many times and they gave me some information about it.

First of all, they said that it is pretty safe if you take the old national
road. It is almost parallel with the national road but has much less traffic
because it goes through every coast village. Also, since it's a coast road,
the elevation is minimal. They said, that if you start very early in the
morning, you can easily reach Kiato within a day, with multiple stops for
coffee and juice in villages. From Kiato, you can take the train (Proastiakos)
to Athens. It usually takes ~1.5 hour to arrive in Athens, at «Larissa
Station» where you can take the metro for the hotel. If you want to do it in 2
days, they said that you could find accomodation in «Aigio» which is quite a
big city.

They promised to send me a map with the route which you can upload in your
GPS. From what they told me, the ride via the old national road is awsome and
the view of the Corinthian gulf, with the bridge on the background, is very
beautiful..
