Hi Battlemeshers,

I hope you are exited about coming to Porto for the WBMv9! Here is some
important information regarding the next week event:

*Day 0 - April 30*

- You SHOULD sign in for the WBM mailing list: all the official
announcements are done through the mailing list. Here is the subscription
link: http://ml.ninux.org/mailman/listinfo/battlemesh

- Please bring a laptop with you, some wireless equipment you find useful
for the battle and an Ethernet cable. There will be a cabled DMZ Gigabit
connection to the RCTS/GEANT2 network (university network) and a WPA-PSK
shared connection across all the APs on the campus (400+). The same
credentials can be used in public places across the city of Porto or nearby
any Faculty. The credentials will be given later on. Eduroam network is
also available.

- We need to give the final number for the social events, otherwise we
might not guarantee your place. Social events are sponsored, you can sign
here http://doodle.com/poll/7yrwt98qiawwneiw for the cruise and cellar tour
on Tuesday and here http://doodle.com/poll/vwsswqii695k4xip for the social
dinner on Thursday. The cruise starting hour has been changed and is 9:30
am instead of 10:15.

- When you arrive in Porto Airport you have two options to go to the city
center, the cheapest one is by metro, with the purple line. The trip costs
user €1,85 and the rechargeable card 0,60€. You can recharge it later. The
ride takes 30-35 min to arrive at Trindade station, then it will be 5-10
minutes walking for each of the hostels. The last metro departures around
1am, and it is safe to walk through the city at that time. Please check the
WBMv9 wiki for more details and maps. The second option is by Taxi, just
outside the arrivals. You can take the first one on the queue, the price is
the same (around €25 to the city center, depending on the traffic).

- Most of the people, specially younger than 30-40 years old speak English
(older ones speak some French typically), so there should be no problem
understanding you. If not just try again with another person. Porto
citizens are usually friendly and we like to welcome tourists!

- Porto (and Portugal) is considered a safe place. Usually it is safe to
walk around the city during the day and night (of course if you leave
something unattended I cannot guarantee it will stay forever :) ). Smoke is
allowed only outdoors (strict rule), unless specified. Drinking is allowed
indoors and outdoors. Making too much noise after 10 p.m. should be
avoided.

- There are tree main mobile operators in Portugal: Vodafone PT, Meo and
NOS. Each one of those provide full GSM/LTE-Adv coverage. You may contact
your operator to check the roaming capabilities (the prices are way cheaper
from today on), or buy a SIM card at any shopping centre - there is one
right next to IPO station, near FEUP.

- Porto Tourism Office: You can get free tourism information, maps and
official souvenirs: https://goo.gl/maps/GZGZPWK6LQq

- Porto Tourism Police Office: There is a police office specifically
dedicated to tourists in English if you need any assistance. It is right
next to the Porto Tourism Office: https://goo.gl/maps/wCDCUJDDWCt

- Public Hospitals: Porto city has 2 large public hospitals. The one closer
to the accommodation is Hospital de Santo António,(
https://goo.gl/maps/pD6axa5t1W92). The other one, and the biggest is
located right next to FEUP and is called Hospital de São João (
https://goo.gl/maps/8xWdvJm9UrH2). If you are an European citizen you may
freely apply to the european health insurance card and you will not pay the
emergency room services. Otherwise it should be around €100. There are also
some private hospitals: CUF Porto (https://goo.gl/maps/QNKmHkBoWFm) and
Lusíadas Porto (https://goo.gl/maps/HEWwcvwiGQM2). Just in case :)

- European Emergency Number: 112

Everything is set up from our side! Let the battle begin! I hope you enjoy
your stay!

Any other subject, you may contact by email (we will be monitoring the
e-mail quite often). For any really urgent subject, my phone number is +351

Best Regards,
Filipe Teixeira
