The point is you can switch of HWMP completely in 802.11s and just use
it similar to adhoc-mode. Run any kind of layer-3 routing protocol on
top and you are fine.

so even if adhoc mode is not working with a driver, using 802.11s
(with deactivated HWMP) might be a second option to run a mesh.
