Ebbene non si tratta soltanto di finzione scenica: <a href="/link/27499" target="_blank" title="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samy_Kamkar" style="font-weight: bold;">Samy Kamkar</a>, che tra le altre cose è l'autore di <a href="/link/27500" target="_blank" title="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samy_%28computer_worm%29" style="font-weight: bold;">un worm</a> che nel 2006 destò parecchia preoccupazione, ha davvero un dispositivo USB in grado di fare tutto ciò.

Lo tiene talvolta appeso al collo a mo' di collana e l'ha chiamato <a href="/link/27501" target="_blank" title="http://samy.pl/usbdriveby/" style="font-weight: bold;">USBdriveby</a>.

È un microcontroller che si collega direttamente alla porta USB da dove, grazie a alcune caratteristiche di implementazione dello standard USB (per esempio, il fatto che quando si inserisce una tastiera non è richiesto alcun permesso speciale) e dei sistemi attuali, riesce a prendere il controllo del computer.
</p><p>
In circa un minuto, USBdriveby si fa passare per una tastiera e per un mouse, disabilita le eventuali applicazioni che monitorano la rete, disabilita il firewall di OS X, modifica i DNS inserendone altri sotto il controllo del suo creatore, apre una backdoor con una connessione in uscita verso un server da cui ricevere comandi e ripulisce le tracce del proprio passaggio.
