I think you are right, there's only infrastructure mode with TDMA. 
Because somebody has to manage and allocate timeslots. Also 
synchronization of all timers could get complicated in an ad-hoc scenario.

I am using AirOS and their SDK in an outdoor network and also tried to 
understand their TDMA better. I think there's still a carrier sensing. 
Otherwise it would be problematic to fulfill the regulations. 
Furthermore I am not sure if it isn't a very advanced form of station 
polling.
