A bemusing thing about this is that we've come full circle. During
early networking experiments at PARC,  in the mid 1970s,  the office
split in half and the network got separated by a two offices a few
blocks apart. This was unacceptible as they'd grown very dependent on
their first network system, for, well, everything.

One of the engineers engineered a laser (visible light, probably
commandeered from a prototype laser printer, but I don't remember) to
connect the two buildings.

On a foggy night, the fog made the laser very visible and it scared
some folk that thought it was some sort of alien invasion, and a
police visit occured to straighten it all out.
