Atheros is very simple as far as families are concerned:  ath5k is 802.11g, ath9k is 802.11n, and ath10k is 802.11ac.  However, while ath5k and 9k are softMACs with good drivers, ath10k is a hardMAC with closed firmware.
Others may know more about individual models.
