It wouldn't be the first time.  "Embrace, Extend, Extinguish" is one of their favourite strategies.

They did it to Java until Sun got an injunction against them, at which point C# surfaced as a direct replacement.  Java mostly survived that until the Oracle takeover.  C# is just M$ Java with slightly different syntax, and nearly all of Java's inherent faults intact.

Arguably, they also did it to Nokia, though that probably wasn't their conscious intention (but spectacularly "successful" regardless).

Put simply, M$ have never shown me a single good reason to trust them - on anything.
