Marek Lindner gave me this link a the battle of the mesh. It is the initial sources of the ap51 tool to flash the Fonera but with additional patches.

Note, that devel has shifted from http://ff-firmware.cvs.sourceforge.net/viewvc/ff-firmware/ap51-flash/ to open-mesh, mainlybecause Marek Lindner wants to hack something new that probably supports also Windows and not only Linux.

you should get in touch with Marek before staring a completely new project. He told me he wants support many more device, and not just atheros based stuff.
