Hi,

Following the Recon report last week, I would like to thank the recon
team for coming to Porto and helping the organization of the next year
edition!

I will try to make a brief introduction to the local team. My name if
Filipe Teixeira, and I was one of the WBMv6 participants, in Aalborg. I
am currently working at INESC TEC (Institute for Systems and Computer
Engineering, Technology and Science), which is a non-profit association
with a strong telecommunications research team (100+ researchers), and
about 30 specifically on wireless networks.

When I saw on the mailing list the Call for WBMv9, I thought that Porto
could be a great option for one of the next WBM, for a number reasons.
First, I enjoyed participating in the WBM, second I have been working
with wireless mesh networks since my MSc thesis, back in 2010, and third
i thought I could contribute to the community by helping organizing the
event.

To put this idea into practice I have talked with Filipe Ribeiro and
Mário Lopes, two colleagues also at INESC TEC, which supported the idea
and helped setting up the local team necessary to propose this venue to
the WBM community.

On the past years, the INESC Wireless Networks group [1] has
participated in a number of projects featuring different areas of
wireless networks, ranging from large scale indoor wi-fi deployments
(multimedia content and smart meters) to underwater, underground,
maritime and airborn communications. These solutions are being developed
in large concert halls, energy meters, underwater autonomous vehicles,
fishing vessels and unmanned aerial vehicles/drones. At the moment I am
more involved in underwater networks and maritime communications. One of
the most interesting projects done in this area was the Mare-Fi, where
we give free Internet access to fishing vessels up to 13 km from shore.

Personally I am very motivated to have the WBM in Porto. I am counting
on the local team and other Portuguese guys who are willing to give a
hand, but also and more especially from previous years organizers and
participants to give their feedback and helping on the several tasks to
make WBM a success.

At the moment, the most important task is to vote for the date for the
WBM [2]. This will have implications on the venue and the hotels. Please
vote ASAP, even if you are not sure you can attend.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask us! We are looking forward
to seing you at the WBM in Porto!

Best regards,
Filipe Teixeira
