Has anybody tried cloning older firmware from know working TP-LINK devices
to these locked ones?

Can't we just put old firmware via flash programmer and call it a day? Yes,
it need to be done by removing flash chip, putting it in programmer and
then putting it back in...
But is there any reason why this approach wouldn't work? Has anybody tried
it?
