"AC" refers to the latest generation of 802.11 wifi protocols, namely
802.11ac. The Atheros ath9k chips are 802.11n; the ath10k chips are
802.11ac.

At least according to the IEEE specification, ad-hoc modes should be
available for both 802.11ac and 802.11n. In reality, some chip
manufacturers don't even bother implementing adhoc mode support in their
drivers. Open source driver support for these modes will vary based on the
chip.
