You could say to generator that you want just a zip with reference
configuration and push/merge that over (as it is mostly content of the
would-be OpenWrt /etc directory) with SSH. But why would you do this if
you can simply flash it? :-) You get with this also new firmware
upgrades. And are sure that new configuration is really compatible with
firmware.

But yes, this means node's downtime. Currently we do not support it as
it is much harder to make just configuration which would be compatible
between (old) versions. But the premise is that for people who would
like to use that it is probably not a problem to push/merge the
configuration over manually.

We are planing in next major release of our system automatic update of
nodes and it will be smarter in a way that if it is enough (no important
(or compatibility breaking changes) firmware upgrades) it will just push
configuration, otherwise it will flash. But for this SSH is used.
